Hello again for another installment of the Art Challenge Projects. Now that we're starting to get into a rhythm with releases, the goal is that you will see one of these every other Sunday or Monday, so stay tuned.
The more of these Sara and I do, the more I realize how open ended our ideas can be. Something about an underwater, deep-diving submarine can conjure a lot of ideas and sometimes the one I have in my head contrasts what Sara sends over to me. And that's part of the challenge: how do I make her artwork more alive?
The drawing turned out to be a bit lighter and more open than I had imagined. In the frame, the submarine is alone with no surrounding landmarks and is near the surface of the water, to give some more light. But when I first saw it, the question I asked was what is the torpedo doing? I'm not sure if Sara even had any plan for it but I had to come up with some sort of story so that the music can have a character. So I decided that this submarine is exploring in the arctic when it comes across an enemy vessel, on which our sub sneaks up and launches a surprise attack.
To make something like that work, I decided to go with an ambient base for the track with sounds that evoke underwater and a cold feel. The three sections of the piece represent different parts the of story. The first part sets the scene and the second introduces the main character (the sub). Still calm and ambient, these sections follow the tone of the vessel being alone in a cold sea. And the third section is the build to firing the shot that starts the subsequent battle, which is where the track ends.
