Hello again for another installment of the Art Challenge Projects. Thank you for checking out and supporting Sara's and my work as we continue to complete these projects.
The original idea for this week's project was "exploring a cave," which was provided by our Aunt Mary. When Sara and I talked about it, I liked the idea of having a bright torch lighting up a large cavern with a big waterfall. I should expect it at this point but to my surprise Sara delivered that basic concept with a twist: glowing rocks in the cave ceiling. This gives a cool fantasy-adventure vibe with the two explorers in frame. When writing music, I really enjoy mixing sound effects of the scene into the track to help create an atmosphere. I often avoid the practice because the music sometimes leans too heavily on the ambience and cannot stand well on its own. However, this time I decided to create the cave waterfall ambience to bring out that attraction in the artwork. The story of this piece was a bit easier to create than previous weeks. Sara provided a subject and action for me this time: two explorers discovering an almost magical cave. The music goes back and forth between smooth, ambient sounds to light, moving sections. As the explorers go, the lighter sections represent their travel to different areas of the cave and each time the music slows back down as they pause to take in the new discoveries, represented by the recurring ambient piano section.
